Cepheus Watercolour Constellation A5 Painting + History Note | Greek Myth of the King

£25.00

King of Aethiopia, husband of the proud queen Cassiopeia and father to the beautiful Andromeda, Cepheus’ legacy is unfortunately not a noble one.

When a sea monster named Cetus was sent by Poseidon to terrorise Aethiopia’s coastline, Cepheus had no idea how to defeat it. In his panic, he consulted an oracle who told him the only way to stop the attack was to sacrifice his daughter to the monster. And so, spurred by superstition instead of bravery, Cepheus chained Andromeda to a rock by the ocean and left her to be taken by Cetus.

Luckily, Perseus rescued Andromeda and the two fell in love and married soon after, living a long and happy life together.

Cepheus is not as bright as other constellations around it, but it’s best seen between late September and December from the northern hemisphere and just below the Equator in the southern hemisphere.

This A5 watercolour comes with its own carefully researched History Note detailing the story behind the constellation. As Cepheus is closely associated with stories from ancient Greece, he would make the perfect gift for a mythology lover.
