Latin for ‘dolphin’, Delphinus represents the story of Arion a famous musician who was travelling by sea after gaining a huge fortune. Spurred by greed, the sailors on his ship plotted to kill him and steal his gold. After being overpowered, Arion was granted the opportunity to sing one final song and his performance was so captivating it attracted a pod of dolphins.
Taking advantage of the distraction, Arion jumped overboard and was rescued by one of the dolphins who carried him safely to the Greek coastline.
It’s said that Apollo – the god of music – was so moved by the dolphin’s act of saving the poet, that he placed the animal amongst the stars to honour it.
Delphinus is best seen between late June and September from nearly everywhere on Earth.
