Corvus & Crater Watercolour Constellation A5 Painting + History Note | Greek Myth of the Crow and the Cup
Also known as ‘the crow and the cup’, Corvus and Crater represent a moral tale from ancient Greece.
According to mythology, the god Apollo was preparing for a sacrifice and sent a crow to fetch him water in a cup. Instead of hurrying back, the crow became distracted by a ripening fig tree. To cover up its deception, it blamed a water snake for the delay, but Apollo could not be fooled. Furious at the deception, he cursed the bird and placed it in the sky along with the cup of water just out of reach so it could never again quench its thirst.
Corvus and Crater are two small constellations that sit beside each other above Hydra the water snake. Their stars may not be very bright but they sit in a dark patch of sky making them easier to spot.
They are best seen between late March and June from nearly everywhere on Earth.
This A5 watercolour comes with its own carefully researched History Note detailing the story behind the constellation. As Corvus & Crater is closely associated with Greek mythology, he would make the perfect gift for a mythology lover.
