Corona Australis Watercolour Constellation A5 Painting + History Note | Greek Myth of the Southern Crown
Corona Australis is a very small constellation within the southern hemisphere. Its name translates to ‘southern crown’ in Latin and is usually signified by a wreath of laurel branches or myrtle leaves. During ancient Greece, wreaths symbolised virtues such as honour and victory. It’s said that Dionysus, the demigod son of Zeus and a mortal woman Semele, placed the crown of leaves in the sky to honour his mother’s rescue from Hades and the underworld.
The brightest star within the constellation is called Alphekka Meridiana, which comes from the Arabic phrase ‘the brightest (star) of the broken ring (of stars)’.
The southern crown is best seen between late June and September from the southern hemisphere and the bottom half of the northern hemisphere.
This A5 watercolour comes with its own carefully researched History Note detailing the story behind the constellation. As Corona Australis is closely associated with honour and victory, it would make the perfect gift for a winner.
