Auriga Watercolour Constellation A5 Painting + History Note | Greek Myth of the Charioteer

£25.00

Auriga is a beautiful constellation located in the northern hemisphere and is most visible during the winter months.

The word Auriga is Latin for ‘charioteer’ and is often linked to the ancient king of Athens, Erichthonius who was known as the inventor of the four-horse chariot. Legend has it that Athena taught him to work with horses, a skill which he mastered very quickly and made him an excellent charioteer. He was said to have won many chariot races in the Panathenaic games, the Olympics of ancient Athens. Erichtonius impressed the gods so much so they immortalised him in the stars.

Erichthonius is often depicted holding a goat, symbolised by the star Capella, along with her two kids represented by stars Haedi I and Haidi II.

This A5 watercolour comes with its own carefully researched History Note detailing the story behind the constellation. As Auriga is closely associated with chariot racing, it would make the perfect gift for an equestrian or racing lover.
