Carina, Puppis and Vela are three constellations that make up a larger constellation into the shape of a ship called Argo Navis, which means ‘the ship of Argo’.
The Argo was said to be the first ever ship and was captained by Jason, son of king Iolcus. Jason was next in line to the throne when his uncle Pelias stole it for himself. Pelias made a deal with Jason that if he could retrieve the mythical Golden Fleece, then he could reclaim the throne.
After a very long and dangerous voyage on the Argo, the heroes returned with the fleece and Jason became king. Athena, the goddess of wisdom and strategy, placed Argo amongst the stars to commemorate the ship.
Argo Navis is seen from late December to March and is located in the southern hemisphere.
